ATAPI Half-Height DVD-ROM DRIVE - 6X/32X SD-M1212
Toshiba continues its tradition of innovation with the SD-M1212 DVD-ROM
drive. The drive's improved pick up head and newly developed digital signal
processor give users the fastest access to the many games, multimedia and
education titles now available on DVD. The SD-M1212 also provides transfer
rates six times that of first generation DVD-ROM drives, released just three
years ago and 32 times speed maximum playback for CD-ROM
- 6X Data Transfer CD-R,
- CD-RW Compatible
- Ultra DMA
- 246KB Buffer
- 110ms Random Access

Review
Good device. I replaced my old 2x DVD-ROM with this one only because of SPDIF
out. There are no difference between 2x and 6x for DVD and for CDROM between 24x
and 32x is very small. Audio extraction speed is not fast - reliable only at 4x
(measured by Easy CD Creator).
Nero CD Speed reports that it reads CDR at 16x-32x and access time 88ms.
Pros: has SPDIF out - that allows you to digitally transfer audio data to
your sound card (of cause if one supports it) replacing usually not good DAC on
CDROM with probably more good one the sound card, but it will improve quality
only if you have the good one. And the most useful property - RPC1 - that means
that drive itself has not region coding protection and allows you to use any DVD
disk.
Cons: slightly noisy, does not read DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (but it is common
problem for DVD-ROM drives due to standard problems, as I now DVD-RAM is
supported only by Hitachi 5000 and later models).
