Review
Tray moves fast and quietly, by the slightest touch. The drive itself is very
quiet.
Original firmware version is RPC2 (that's bad here in Russia as half DVD
movies you bought have region 5 and the rest region 1 and you will get your
drive region locked after 5 changes), but with modified firmware provided on
rpc1.org you can make this drive RPC1.
Writes CD-RW at fixed speeds, i.e. if CD-RW supports 8x-10x speeds drive will
allow to write only at 10x, 1x-4x only at 4x. Disk quality test (by Nero) shows
C2 errors average rate about 100 independent of speed you write or read it.
Video DVD (any media) have a very long recognition time. And I had some
annoying problems (like movie file read error at 99%) with slightly scratched
surface which old plain combo drive on notebook red without any hesitation.
After some investigation turned out that very long DVD
recognition time takes place only on Windows XP, while on plain old Windows 98
it is fast enough. The reason as I think is in Macromedia Safedisc protection
driver (secdrv.sys) which scans inserted CD/DVD content for its own reason. If
it is disabled then Windows XP recognize DVD as fast as Windows 98.
Additionally, disabling this driver allows to read some files on damaged disk,
while it enabled the Windows tries to read all files and fails on bad file after
many minutes preventing access to other files. Unfortunately you can not run
copy protected with Safedisc game when secdrv.sys disabled, either enable it or
look for "no cd" version of this game. In some cases to make disc readable you
need to start then stop secdrv.sys, not disable it!
Drive does not support DVD overburn feature.
Disk statistics:
- Intenso CD-RW 4x-12x - drive do not like this disk, almost impossible to
write them so that all files were readable!
- Verbatim CD-RW 8x-10x - very good results. It seems, drive likes only
brand name and very dislikes noname.
- eProFormance DVD+RW 2.4x - fast reading, starting at 4x.
- Verbatim DVD+RW 4x - reading slower then DVD+RW 2.4x.
- Philips DVD+RW 4x - slow reading at beginning of the disk (1.5x).
Specifications
Beginning
June 2004 NEC introduces his first dual 8x DVD recording drive, that supports
besides 8x write speed for DVD-R and for DVD +R media and 4x write or rewrite
with DVD-RW and DVD +RW media as well the new functionality to write up to 8.5GB
on the new double layer DVD +R9 media.
ND-2510 comprises the most important 9 optical storage functions in 1 drive –
the ideal all in one optical device. This new model offers fast DVD recording
together with high speed CD recording and excellent read performance by using
NEC’s know how developing and producing highly reliable optical storage devices.
With the ND-2510A not only the user does not need to choose for one DVD format
or the other – he has the freedom to choose the DVD R media of his choice
without a compromise in performance or storage capacity: 1 hour DVD Video can be
record in less than 10 minutes. Whether consumer desires to share cost-efficient
home movies, music and/or private data by using write once discs, or like to
store any kind of digital data only for a certain period by using rewriteable
discs, the NEC ND-2510A is capable to store up to 8.5 GB onto one DVD disc (or
700 Mbyte on a CD disc).
The ND-2510A takes advantage of NEC’s “high resolution writing strategy” and of
an improved version of NEC’s “Active Optimized Power Control” (Active OPC, the
“high resolution writing strategy”. Besides, NEC supported its own developed
buffer underrun error prevention technology technology.
